The A. H. Pelz Company
was founded in 1896 in Cleveland by the Pelz family as a full
service bookbinding operation. Our father, John B. Cihon began
working for Pelz briefly in the 1930’s. After Enlisting in the
Army-Air Force for service in World War II, he became a P.O.W.
in Germany following the bomber he was in being shot down on a
My father returned to Pelz after the war and eventually became
plant superintendent. He purchased the business from an aging
Otto Pelz in 1969. At this time the business was very diverse,
doing work in many different bindery operations. In the following
years, do to the changes and demands of the graphic arts industry,
he began to focus the business on a narrower variety of specialized
bindery services. This included custom index tab printing and
processing pre-printed sheets from local print shops into custom

automatic plastic index tab machine, which was delivered in 1971,
we have been producing a lot of index tabs for a very long time.

My brother and I began working for my father in the mid 1970’s
and have continued to uphold the ideals which my father always
taught us, honesty, quality and fair pricing. Our customers include
many of the finest printers, copy centers and corporations in
Northeast Ohio such as Ernst & Young, Eaton Corporation, Medical
Mutual, National City Bank and Sherwin-Williams.
